Seeds need a period of moist stratification before they will germinate. While some may germinate without this treatment the percentage increases greatly if its used. Once ready to proceed place seeds in cold water and soak for 24 hours. Refer to our Stratification Instructions to choose the best method for you. These will be included with any seed purchase.
Cold stratify seeds for 60 days if using a refridgerator, longer if using a cold outbuilding method, simply wait for winter to be over. In warmer states a refridgerator will be necessary to achieve the desired cold exposure for the seeds.
Sow seeds not more than 1/4 inch (5mm) deep in good sterile seeding mix. Keep moist and place in a cool to slightly warm location, 70-75°F (21-24°C). not hot and do not use heating pad. Germination is still slow and erratic commonly about 4-8 weeks. Sowing in small pots with few seeds to a pot ensures that germinated seeds can be transplanted without disturbing other non germinated seeds. Be patient with ungerminated they can sometimes take a considerable while to germinate.
This method can only be used in areas where it gets cold enough for long enough. If your winters are mild and/or short it will be necessary to germinate using a refridgerator.
